VS (the biggest french webzine) have review the second album !
I just have to precise that Wasted (the redactor) is a very complicate listener !

http://www.vs-webzine.com/new.php?page= ... h=&droite=

(I have donemy best for the translation ...)

"When I was knowing that I will receive the new album of the Swedish DEVIAN, I was thinking that the review will done very quick. With a first average album and the second one that is release very quick, I wasn't imagine how DEVIAN will surprise me and nevertheless ...

Our eternal VS-grumbler will be one more time agree with me to say a so talented drummer thant Emil Dragutinovic is always under use in DEVIAN in comparison with what he show in the past with MARDUK or THE LEGION. It what make me furious and on what I was focused on during the first listening, nevertheless I was wrong the resume the second album to that. Of course on "God to the Illfated", Emil was authorized to place some blasts but it isn't enough to give a new breathe to the music of DEVIAN. In the other hand where DEVIAN is metamorphosed is in the way to compose the songs. Out the basic death/thrash et welcome the deep metal with ultra catchy riffs. The death/thrash stay of course the background of "God to the illfated", but he is sublimate by all the little plus take in the swedish melodeath, indeed à the NWOBM for a song like "When the Vultures". This new orientation is base on melody and all is so open to criticism than appreciable and It what it concern myself I'm under the charm of the album. I confess to have been surprised by the clean vocals on "Saintbleeder" or on the bridge very "Slipknotish" before the chorus of the song that have give the title to the album, but as the soli in the song, "God To The Illfated" is deeply efficient.

For the mix, DEVIAN leave Fredman to take the way of the Abyss Studio. A place well-known of Legion to have record here all the albums of MARDUK when he was in. One more time Peter Tägtgren have done an excellent work and the sound of "God To The Illfated" is today the best adapted to DEVIAN, no I'm the run down the work of Nordström, but DEVIAN was needed in my opinion to be detached from the typical swedish sound in which he was lock in.

Finally we find a powerful and clean prod, in conclusion all that "God To The Illfated" was needed to well intensify the songs. Varied and catchy from the beginning to the end, the CD leave me an excellent impression and at the moment I'm writting this words he is always on my reader and I don't want to put it back soon. This show that we can still release good extrem metal album without bast avery time.

wasted | 15,5/20"

Just in german, but I translated them. Sorry for some spelling mistakes :P

It gets brachial straight down to the nitty-gritty with the second album of the Swedes. While the previous Album “Ninewinged Serpent” was tossed out on an absolute high level, “God to the Illfated” even gets up the ante with supreme ambitious and pressing sound. The guys around Ex-Marduk singer Legion and Drummer Emil Dragutinovic fights on the album with a bloody marvellous mix between Oldschool Death with thrashy riffs and duly black aggression, without acting any old or dusty.

Great songwriting, a amount of variety, super production (once more trusted in the abilities of Hypocrisy/Pain Mastermind Peter Tägtgren and his Abyss Studio) and magnificent musicians (besides the alreday mentioned: Jonas „Joinus“ Mattson from Nominion/Sargatanas Reign, Facebreaker singer/Edge of Sanity bass player Roberth Karlsson and Tomas Nilsson of Suicidal Seduction) are cornerstones of an absolute amazing album from the house of Century Media, where the guys once again availed the Cover Artwork from the greek artist Seth (Exodus, Soilwork, Paradise Lost)

And that the departure Legions from Marduk has been the best decision for both sites, is getting underpinned with this album. He finally proves himself being the serious professional musician he is, you never apprehend him to be, in the lines of Marduk.

The Ex- Marduk mercenary force around vocalist Legion and Drummer Dragutinovic had a real volume of work. Just short of 14 months after the strong “Ninewinged Serpent” the follower already see the light of the day.

Regarding the production the guys almost bank of the same people who has appropriately stage the predecessor marvellously. Which means: Rickard Kottelin has produced it and Peter In De Betous was responsible for the Mastering. Merely the Mixing were changed from Fredrik Nordström to Hypocrisy/Pain Mastermind Peter Tägtgren. The Result: A massive, humming sound which is blowing up the Death/Thrash Mix terrifically in your face.

Whilst reducing Devian just to Death and Thrahs Metal would be totally wrong. Especially the more various vocal work from Erik Hagstedt enrich the in total 10 contending songs of “God to the Illfated”

It’s also almost indispensable, if you prefer the rather “speedy” Tracks (The opener “Mask of Virtue” for example) or rather the fundamental melodic material (“Saintbleeder”). Devian offers everything from anything and that even almost perfectly implemented. And old, astute dogs like Legion and the Dragutinovic are, they of course put the real banger nicely on the end of the album. On the one Hand “Awaiting Doom“, which doesn’t want to fulfil its trackname but can convince with its short but wonderful acoustic part. And at the other end the almost 8 minutes long “When the vultures have left”. Initiated from a sacral “keyboard carpet” this Mammoth track arises highly melodic but coincident minacious from the speakers. Probably the most mature and most convincing work of the Swedes so far!

Devian really has to be seen firmly established with their second full length album in the extreme metal scene. Especially the anyhow almost playful seeming balancing act between several subgenres of Metal, which is even practised with such sleaziness, makes “God to the Illfated” to a sparkling and pleasant highlight for the fading away metal year.

Once again we visualize, how fast time can go by, because it’s already more than one year ago since the new „Deathroll” around the both Ex Marduk Warlords Erik and Emil, Devian, presented their Debut Album to us. With “God to the Illfated” we now get the followed work of the Swedes which let’s the debut look like a just "coughed out card" anyhow.

Honestly said I’m much surprised about the sequel of their young career, but this amazement is completely positive. The album seems like they just wanted to leave a quick mark in the record stores one year ago which has to be entitled with the headline “Here, this in advance, next year we will blow you away appropriately!”
What Devian are enchanting with “God to the Illfated” is musically regarded a jump in progress which is a simply jump across several steps at one time probably bringing that to your hearing what they actually have planned in the first place. More smoothing, compositional sophisticated melodies, crashing Thrash Riffs and a rapid, full dynamically Drumming – That’s Devian 2008. Above all this thrones once again Legions incomparable strong voice power, which makes the song believingly “evil”! At the song “Saintbleeder” we even hear some lines of clear vocals which is admittedly catching the painful basic mood of the songpassages. In general Legion does not just give his honour in a nagging way, but varies cozily between the different Stiles of his typical vocals, deep growls and partly spoken parts. But don’t panic! Nothing loses its charm here and they also don’t try to sound more modern in a compulsive way. You still get the fist straight in your face and in your belly.
One or the other person perhaps gets a little confused, but will get used to this killer of an album, so that nothing is in its way anymore of a non stop pleasure of the whole album.
Of course they keep the basic tenor on the new album, contenting the typical Sweden-Death coupled with modern melodies and an aggressive Thrash-Thunderstorm but all in all they look far beyond the settled horizons and refine their own stile in head and shoulders better.
Again the production of the album is a pure ear candy. They straight hit the perfect value and don’t have to be worried at the other hand to get bombarded with the adjective “over produced”.
Result: A clearly killer album! A three-quarter of an hour Devian offers a powerful album which will be very difficult to be increased, but who knows… after all they made it to top the previous album by worlds! I’m excited what the future brings for them. At least I will follow it with Excitement
